Instructions Following Temporary Crowns and Bridges

  • A temporary is just as stated - it does not in any way resemble the final restoration in color, shape or fit. This is only a temporary state.
  • Because they are made from resin like materials, and placed with temporary cements, they are more prone to breakage, un-cementation and discoloration. Temporary crowns and bridges will have problems if you do not watch your diet and habits. You are primarily in control of these complications.
These problems can often be eliminated when you follow these directions.
  1. Stay away from sticky foods such as taffy, caramel, and doughy bread.
  2. Carefully floss the area. Pulling upwards on floss could remove or loosen the temporary.
  3. Avoid chewing on that side of the mouth. Heavy chewing as in peanuts, hard candy, popcorn kernels, etc., is especially important to avoid.
  4. If the temporary loosens, return it to the prepared tooth or store it in a safe place and contact the office for an appointment to have it re-cemented. Bring the temporary with you to the office.
  5. Do brush the area to keep it clean. Teeth may be more sensitive to brushing and cold temperatures, but your teeth still require proper daily care.

If gums become tender while in a temporary, use extra time to brush (massage) the gums and rinse with warm salt water.

In addition, please also remember that implants functioning under a temporary are still in a transitional healing stage and should not be submitted to excessive leads, which could jeopardize their long-term success. The same excessive forces noxious to the implants and underlying bone are the ones, which damage temporary restorations.

Fees for problems with temporary crown or bridge work:

Most of our patients do not experience problems with their temporary teeth. However, should problems arise, rather than increase our fees for everyone to make crowns or bridges, the office will charge an additional fee to only those patients who have problems with their temporaries. One re-cementation or repair appointment will be performed at no charge. The following office policy applies:

  • After the first re-cementation, there will be a $45.00 fee to re-cement the temporary. The temporary will come loose if you chew sticky or hard food.
  • If the temporary is lost or broken, there will be an $85.00 fee for each tooth on the temporary to replace it.
