How to Keep Your Hardworking Dentures in Tip-Top Shape

Now that you’re wearing your new dentures in West Palm Beach, you’ll want to keep them in good condition so that you can maintain a healthy and beautiful smile for years to come. Thankfully, caring for your new teeth isn’t difficult at all. To help you get started, let’s talk about the basic rules of denture care.

What Are the Basic Rules of Denture Care?

Handle Them with Great Care

Although your dentures are built to last, they can also be very fragile. If you use toothpicks on them, you’ll end up scratching the surface and creating places for bacteria to hide. Moreover, they can easily break if you accidentally drop them in the sink while you’re brushing them.

You’ll want to make sure that you handle your dentures with care. Cleaning your dentures over a folded towel or a bowl of water is an effective way to cushion the blow and reduce the chances of damage in case you drop them.

Brush Them Daily

Just like natural teeth, your dentures can become stained or harbor bacteria and tartar. If they’re not cleaned once a day, they can potentially irritate your gums or cause an infection.

It’s best to take them out after every meal and use a soft-bristled denture brush to get rid of food particles and plaque. When you take them out before bedtime, be sure to soak them in a denture disinfecting solution overnight.

Give Them a Break

You have to let your mouth rest and give your dentures a break for about six to eight hours while you sleep at night. This allows your soft oral tissue to recover while you soak your dentures in a special solution to disinfect them and keep them from drying up and losing their shape.

Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene

After taking out your dentures, be sure to rinse your mouth and massage your gums with a facecloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you have remaining teeth, be sure to brush them thoroughly as well.
